Ballon d’Or/Golden Ball 2018 – Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo (Week #12)

A very quiet week for Lionel Messi as football is on international duty.  Argentina played Italy and won by the score of 2-0, but la Pulga did not feature in this match, being rested by manager Jorge Sampaoli.

Cristiano Ronaldo played for Portugal vs. Egypt and Mohamed Salah and both players scored.  Ronaldo scored 2 goals in additional time to lead his country to a 2-1 win vs. the Pharaohs.

Messi and Ronaldo will be on intentional duty again next week as Argentina plays Spain this coming Tuesday and Portugal will face off against the Netherlands on Monday.

Ballon d’Or/Golden Ball 2018 – Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo (Week #11)

Lionel played two games this week.  First, in the UEFA Champions League where he collected two goals and one assist in a 3-0 win over Chelsea FC in the return leg of the round of 16, allowing his club to qualify for the next round where they will face AS Roma. In addition, in Liga Santander, FC Barcelona received Athletic Bilbao this Sunday and La Pulga scored a goal in a vital 2-0 victory for his team.

Cristiano Ronaldo played one game this week, a Liga Santander match against Girona where the Portuguese international scored 4 goals and added an assist in a 6-3 win against Girona.

Ballon d’Or/Golden Ball 2018 – Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo (Week #10)

A rather quiet week for Lionel Messi who had only one game to play, but who forfeited to be at the side of his wife who gave birth to their third child.  Despite the absence of Argentinian genius, FC Barcelona won 2-0 against the worst– and soon to be relegated – team of La Liga Santander, at Malaga on Saturday.  Quietly, the Catalans are headed into a 25th title Spanish Championship title.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been busier and more productive this week.  The shock tie against Paris Saint-Germain FC allowed him to score a vital away goal for his club and earned Real Madrid CF a 2-1 victory to punch their ticket for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.  Moreover, in La Liga Santander, CR7 scored the two goals of his team in a 2-1 win at Eibar, on Saturday as well.

Ballon d’Or/Golden Ball 2018 – Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo (Week #6)

Lionel Messi played two games this week.  In midweek, at Valencia, for the 2nd leg of la Copa del Rey semifinal.  Despite not registering a point, FC Barcelona went on to win the game 2-0 (3-0 on aggregate) and moved on to the final of the competition in which they will face Sevilla FC.  La Pulga also against played in a 0-0 draw, at home, versus Getafe today.  Blanked on the scoresheet, but always dangerous.

Cristiano Ronaldo played only one game this week and it was yesterday, a Liga game, versus Real Sociedad and he had quite a game, registering 3 goals and 1 assist.  Real Madrid CF is still 17 points behind FC Barcelona in the competition, with one game in hand.  Los Blancos are scheduled to feature in the Champions League this Tuesday against Neymar Jr’s Paris Saint-Germain.  It may be Madrid’s only chance to win any trophies this year.

Ballon d’Or/Golden Ball 2018 – Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo (Week #5)

Lionel Messi had an assist on Luis Suarez’s midweek goal against Valencia FC in the first leg of the Spanish Cup semi-final at the Camp Nou. In addition, at Espanyol’s for the local derby, la Pulga added an another assist after coming on as a substitute in the second half in a 1-1 draw.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, only one game played during the week, that of Saturday against modest Levante and despite several opportunities to score, the Portuguese international has, once again, been off of the scoresheet.

Recall that Real Madrid was eliminated from the Spanish Cup and is currently sitting 19 points behind the current La Liga leader, FC Barcelona.

Messi vs. Ronaldo (Golden Ball/Ballon d’Or) – Week 21

With the end of the season behind us, Lionel Messi was the only player busy this week with the Spanish King’ Cup final (la Copa del Rey). FC Barcelona played Sevilla FC, who were just recently crowned Europa League champions for the third year in a row. Despite that, the Catalans giants made sure that they were the only Spanish team to win two trophies this year with a 2-0 victory over their rival from Andalusia. Lionel Messi was on target with two assists.The Argentine international wins his second title in 2016.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his team were off this week and will play the last game of this season against Atlético Madrid for the UEFA Champions League trophy, this Saturday, at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro) in Milan, Italy.

2016 Ballon d’Or – Messi vs. Ronaldo (Week 15)

This week, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo ave been shutout statistically wise. No goal, no assist. This leaves us with the following numbers since January 01st. We count all competitions such club competitions and country competitive games and friendlies.

In La Liga, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored one goal and two assists this Saturday, at home, against Eibar in a 4-0 win for Real Madrid, while Lionel Messi was shutout once again, at la Real Sociedad, with a 1-0 defeat for the Catalan giants.

So far, Messi leads in every aspect of the game and is on course to win a sixth Ballon d’Or. Of course, we are still way early. (In bold, the leading statistic).
